How to write conclusion?
Introduction… huh done, body of the essay also done, paragraphing…. Huh done. So, what’s left for the business? Ah.. its conclusion.
Conclusion is like the icing in the cake. It is the final touch in the beautiful creation we call essay. And like the icing of the cake, it is also done at the end of an essay. As icing completes the cake, conclusion also completes an essay. Conclusion makes an essay worth reading. Good conclusion separates between an excellent essay and the mediocre one. It is a hard lesson to conclude, as there is no such thing as right conclusion or wrong conclusion. It’s subjective, but there are some general things that separate a good and a bad conclusion. There are certain method you can follow to end your essay in impressive manner.
Golden rules of conclusion
- Conclusion is nothing but answering the question
Suppose the question is, what’s your name? Then the conclusion has to be, my name is this Tilak, in my case.
You can start this essay by flashy introduction. You can say that
It was a treacherous winter night. The fog had engulfed the vicinity. Then, there was a cry that broke the silence of the night. And, I was born.
You could further more elaborate the process of your naming ceremony in the body of the essay. Then you arrive in the conclusion of an essay. Your conclusion has to be
Thus my name came to be Tilak.
If the question is about the impact of commercialization on the sports, the conclusion should answer the question. It should state whether commercialization has done good or bad for the sport.
Commercialization has resulted in match fixing, doping and hampered the true spirit of the game. Thus, this is bad.
Answer the question in the conclusion.
- Conclusion is nothing but the summary of the body without repetition.
Before I launch myself into explaining this rule, I think I should make you familiar with the summary.
What is a summary?
Technically defining, a summary is the short abridged version of a big passage. To summarize is to reduce the complex set of facts and sets of information on the manageable length.
The summary also follows three steps procedure.
- Description of the overall view of the body
For example, if you are writing the essay of the commercialization of the sports the overall view would be:-
Commercialization has taken place in sports.
- Going in depth.
The second step is to go in depth. But here depth has to be very shallow. Only the major points of the body should be listed. The repetition is not allowed, so you should rephrase the sentences of the body of the essay and state them in conclusion.
- Drawing the conclusion out of it.
This step is like answering the question, so what? You can say commercialization has taken place in step I. It has resulted in so and so problems in step II. And then you can answer the question so what if the commercialization has taken place? The answer would be thus it is bad. And that is mentioned in the step III.
You don’t have to use all three steps one after another while summarizing. Step I or II or III alone can also be used for summarizing. Step I will give the very shallow summary where as step II will go a bit in depth. Step III will conclude the conclusion.
But it’s better to follow all the three steps.
Remember the summary gives you the overall picture .You cannot just describe a small part of the day and say that it your summary for the whole day. Your summary has to go through whole of the day. Then only it will be the complete one.
Conclusion is nothing but summarizing and answering the question.
Conclusion involves two major ideas of answering the question and summarizing without repetition. You should explain the overall summary of the essay in your conclusion. Then finally you should answer the question. You should say whether commercialization is good or bad.
If you had problems concluding the essays, hope this has helped you.
